The Domingo part of my name came from the fact that my maternal great-grandfather was a sea captain, sailing tallships around the world. Sometimes he would take his wife along. On one such trip, she gave birth to their first child in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic. The president of the island became godfather and, in honour of him being the first Norwegian to be born there, gave him the name Domingo (full name, Hans Domingo Olsen).
The Norwegian government, however, did not allow the name to be used officially ...... in case Norway ever went to war with the Dominican Republic!
Well, you can never be too careful!
